‎President Bola Tinubu has insisted that the implementation of the new tax laws will commence on the 1st of January as planned, despite criticisms from opposition and pressure groups.

‎In a statement made on Tuesday, the president said the tax laws were not designed to raise taxes, but to support a structural reset, drive harmonisation, and protect dignity while strengthening the social contract.

‎According to him, the reforms were a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation for our country.

‎He stated that his administration was aware of the public discourse surrounding alleged changes to some provisions of the recently enacted tax laws

‎However, President Tinubu called for support from the general public as the tax laws would take effect nonetheless.

‎Controversies have continued to trail the new tax laws after a member of the House of Representatives, Abdussamad Dasuki, raised concerns about what he described as discrepancies between what was passed by the National Assembly, and the versions subsequently gazetted and made available to the public.
