The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has declared a total and comprehensive two-week warning strike across all public universities in the country.
The National President of ASUU, Professor Chris Piwuna, announced the decision during a press conference at the University of Abuja on Sunday.
He explained that the action followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government on the 28th of September, after what he described as a lack of meaningful progress in addressing the union’s long-standing demands.
Professor Piwuna said the strike is in line with the union’s National Executive Council resolution, stressing that government’s appeal to suspend the action came too late.
The Federal Government had earlier urged ASUU to shelve the strike, assuring that it was committed to resolving outstanding issues through the reconstituted negotiation committee.
All ASUU branches have been directed to commence full withdrawal of services from midnight on Monday, the 13th of October.
