The National Assembly Joint Committee on Constitution Review has approved the creation of an additional state in the South-East region,
‎If ratified, the decision will increase the number of states in the region from five to six.
‎The approval was reached during a two-day retreat held in Lagos, chaired by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who said the decision was driven by equity, justice, and fairness.
‎Committee member Senator Osita Izunaso described the development as a step in the right direction, saying it will help balance representation among the country’s geopolitical zones.
‎The committee also reviewed over 55 proposals for new states across the federation and set up a team to further examine demands for state police and local government reforms.
‎The move is aimed at addressing long-standing agitation over political marginalisation.
