The National Assembly Joint Committee on Constitution Review has approved the creation of an additional state in the South-East region,
If ratified, the decision will increase the number of states in the region from five to six.
The approval was reached during a two-day retreat held in Lagos, chaired by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who said the decision was driven by equity, justice, and fairness.
Committee member Senator Osita Izunaso described the development as a step in the right direction, saying it will help balance representation among the country’s geopolitical zones.
The committee also reviewed over 55 proposals for new states across the federation and set up a team to further examine demands for state police and local government reforms.
The move is aimed at addressing long-standing agitation over political marginalisation.
