‎The Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has fined Multichoice Nigeria over ₦700,000,000 for violating the Nigerian Data Protection Act (NDP Act)

‎This was contained in a statement signed by the NDPC’s Head of Legal, Enforcement & Regulations, Mr Babatunde Bamigboye.

‎According to him, the investigation, which began in the second quarter of 2024, was triggered by suspected breach of privacy rights of Multichoice subscribers and illegal cross-border transfer of personal data of citizens.

‎The Commission also found that Multichoice carried out illegal cross-border transfer of personal data relating to data subjects in the country

‎Furthermore, Babatunde also revealed that the NDPC’s National Commissioner, Dr Vincent Olatunji, had directed that all outlets through which Multichoice was collecting personal data should be investigated for non-compliance.

‎He added that any outlet that processed personal data in violation of the NDP Act was liable to penalty under the Act.
