The Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has fined Multichoice Nigeria over ₦700,000,000 for violating the Nigerian Data Protection Act (NDP Act)
This was contained in a statement signed by the NDPC’s Head of Legal, Enforcement & Regulations, Mr Babatunde Bamigboye.
According to him, the investigation, which began in the second quarter of 2024, was triggered by suspected breach of privacy rights of Multichoice subscribers and illegal cross-border transfer of personal data of citizens.
The Commission also found that Multichoice carried out illegal cross-border transfer of personal data relating to data subjects in the country
Furthermore, Babatunde also revealed that the NDPC’s National Commissioner, Dr Vincent Olatunji, had directed that all outlets through which Multichoice was collecting personal data should be investigated for non-compliance.
He added that any outlet that processed personal data in violation of the NDP Act was liable to penalty under the Act.
