President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dismissed claims that Nigeria is hostile to religious freedom, saying such descriptions do not reflect the nation’s true reality. His reaction follows comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, who on Friday designated Nigeria a “country of particular concern,” alleging widespread killings of Christians by radical groups.
In a post on X, President Tinubu said Nigeria remains a democracy founded on constitutional guarantees of religious liberty and has maintained open engagement with both Christian and Muslim leaders since 2023. He stressed that Nigeria’s diversity is its strength and that the government continues to protect citizens of all faiths from security threats.
President Tinubu added that religious tolerance is a core national value and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to work with the United States and other global partners to protect vulnerable communities everywhere.
