The death toll from the communal violence in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State has risen to 18 following fresh attacks, police have confirmed.
The conflict, linked to a longstanding land dispute between communities in Godoro Village, began on June 29 with the killing of 25-year-old Ibrahim Musa. A reprisal attack by members of the Yan Sakai vigilante group reportedly claimed the life of 28-year-old Bashir Mazi.
Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun said the violence escalated on July 1 when suspected attackers set a house ablaze in Angwan-Baago, killing 15 people. Another victim was killed elsewhere, bringing the total death toll to 18.
Abiodun said investigations are ongoing, while a reconciliation committee, supported by security agencies and community leaders, is working to resolve the crisis. Joint police and military patrols have also been deployed to restore peace and prevent further attacks.
