The Federal Government has announced a ₦250 million support package for the families of the 37 men who died in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State.

Vice President Kashim Shettima announced the assistance on Monday during a condolence visit to the Niger State Government and the bereaved families, describing the incident as unfortunate and a matter of national concern.

Shettima said the government owed the families justice and answers, stressing that every citizen in state custody remains entitled to protection regardless of allegations against them.

He also said those found responsible must be held accountable through due process.

The Vice President commended Governor Umaru Bago for seeking justice for the victims but urged residents not to politicize the tragedy or demonize the governor.

Governor Bago thanked the Vice President for the visit and pledged the state government’s full cooperation with the ongoing investigation, insisting that the demand for justice was a moral responsibility and not an act of vengeance.
