In a strategic effort to decongest Lagos ports and stimulate regional commerce, the Federal Government has approved a comprehensive multi-billion naira upgrade for four major ports in the South-South region. The infrastructure overhaul targets the Onne, Rivers, Delta, and Calabar port complexes, modernizing their equipment, deepening channel draughts, and expanding cargo handling capacities. Announcing the initiative, government officials emphasized that creating a balanced port system across coastal states will significantly reduce turnaround times for maritime shipping, lower logistics costs for businesses in eastern and central Nigeria, and generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities in maritime trade.
