Nigeria’s Super Eagles have suffered a major ranking setback. Super Eagles 3-0 defeat by Guinea-Bissau in a 2027 AFCON qualifier has caused Nigeria’s senior men’s football team to drop four spots in the latest FIFA ranking released on Wednesday. Eagles dropped from 26th to 30th overall and also now sixth in Africa from their previous third position. In the African standings, Morocco leads, followed by Senegal, Egypt, Algeria and Côte d’Ivoire, with Nigeria now sixth.
The defeat leaves Nigeria three points behind Guinea-Bissau in Group L, while Tanzania are guaranteed a place as co-hosts. Nigeria need to maximise November home-and-away meetings against Tanzania.
There was some cheer in Moscow. Super Eagles rally from behind to draw 3-3 in thrilling Russian friendly in Nizhny Novgorod. Head coach Eric Chelle praised the team’s strong spirit, especially after finding a heavily modified lineup that featured nine players making their international debuts. On the club scene, Super Eagles midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi returned to action for Marseille when they took on Troyes at Stade de l’Aube on Sunday after a knee injury that had ruled him out of international duty. Kelechi Iheanacho also scored again for Bursaspor on October 11, but his late effort could not prevent a 2-1 defeat against Mardin 1969 Spor.
