The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published its final list of 18 presidential candidates and their running mates for the 2027 general elections. The list includes President Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.
The list was released yesterday and today dominates newspaper headlines. For Lagos, Hamzat, Rhodes-Vivour, Doherty and 14 others made INEC’s Lagos list, while nationwide, 25 women will contest governorship seats as parties field 1,016 candidates for State Assemblies. INEC also released the full list of governorship candidates across Nigeria and House of Assembly candidates cleared.
Controversies have trailed the list. Pantami reacts as INEC omits his name from gov list, while PDP and ADC have petitioned over omission of Adebutu and others. Atiku has also demanded transparency from INEC, calling for disclosure of contracts for sensitive election materials and explanations for key staff redeployments. INEC says it has begun early logistics planning, inaugurating a multi-agency Electoral Logistics Committee chaired by Rear Admiral Jamila Malafa (retd.) to ensure seamless execution.
