The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has dragged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the Federal High Court in Abuja, demanding a full financial account of over ₦126.46 billion in public funds flagged in recent audit reports. In suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/2507/2026, filed by SERAP’s deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization is seeking an order of mandamus to compel INEC to disclose detailed expenditure reports regarding money appropriated for electoral operations, procurement of voting materials, logistic vehicles, and technological equipment. The lawsuit stems from the 2023 audited report published by the Auditor-General of the Federation on August 7, 2026, which revealed that multi-billion-naira contracts were awarded to companies with unknown addresses, dubious corporate capacities, and zero documentation showing that the procured items were ever delivered. SERAP maintains that the missing funds violate constitutional transparency principles and undermine citizens’ participatory rights under international human rights treaties.
